The Carlton Connection

Make Safety a Priority in Your Workplace Culture

With so much going on in the workplace, it can be easy to put safety to the wayside in the midst of chaos. However, even just one minor accident can have major consequences on your organization’s reputation and bottom line. Investing in the safety and well-being of your employees is one of the best choices you can make for your culture and long-term success. And, simply including some generic guidelines in your company’s employee handbook is not enough to enforce safety and prevent accidents. You must actively train, educate and enforce safety protocols in every aspect of your company’s management.

To start the month, here are a few warehouse safety practices to implement at your organization immediately.

Require Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Safety

In any manufacturing or industrial work environment, all your employees should be in full protective gear, including hard hats, gloves, safety shoes and eyewear. It’s also important that protective safety equipment is properly stored to ensure its functionality and effectiveness. Regardless of labor demands, protecting employees on the job should always be the paramount concern.

Establish a Clear Safety Policy and Share With Employees

Training your employees on safety is not a choice, it’s a necessity! It’s imperative that you train new employees and give existing staff a refresher on all your organization’s safety protocols. This includes instructing employees about how to identify and proactively prevent safety hazards; how to properly use machinery and equipment; and how to adhere to all safety wear requirements. Your employees should be well-informed and up-to-date about your company’s safety policy and understand its role in minimizing injury and risk to themselves and their co-workers.

Enforce Good Housekeeping

When it comes to safety, you should never underestimate the importance of keeping your workplace environment clean and hazard-free at all times. This involves regularly inspecting workstation areas and making sure all equipment and substances are stored in their proper places to avoid accidental contact. You should also make sure floors and workspaces are kept clean and free of clutter, as well as regularly dispose of any trash or misplaced items.

Regardless of how busy or hectic things may seem, creating a safe environment for your employees should be top-of-mind, no matter what else is happening. You can ensure the greatest degree of organizational safety by creating a culture that’s committed to the warehouse safety practices above.
