What’s the Best Day of the Week to Apply for a New Job?

Has applying to jobs lately felt similar to throwing spaghetti at the wall, hoping something sticks? If you’re struggling to find a rhythm that’s generating favorable results for your job prospects, you may need to start paying more attention to the timing of your applications. It may surprise you to learn that research continuously indicates Tuesday as being the best day of the week to apply for a new job. And, while it’s important to keep your momentum strong every day of the week, here are some reasons to maximize your job search efforts on Tuesdays:

Greater opportunity for consideration

Many studies show that Tuesday is the most popular day of the week for companies to post new jobs, as well as screen candidates and set up interviews. Therefore, getting your name in the applicant pool on Tuesdays will increase your odds of being considered, putting you on the radar of recruiters and hiring managers in the early stages of companies’ hiring processes and the first wave of interviewsWith this being said, it’s important to get your applications in early, ideally in the morning. According to a recent article by Time, research data reveals that most people apply for jobs during the lunch hour – which is why applying earlier in the day will help you beat out some of the competition.

Increased chance of job offers

Along with research about popular screening and interviewing times, data findings also show that hiring managers generally like to make job offers earlier in the week – well in advance of the weekend. This means job offers are more apt to be made on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so job seekers have at least one or two days to consider the offer and make a decision before the week’s end. Keeping this in mind, it’s best to apply and follow up with employers earlier in the week so there’s more time for them to get in touch with you.

A better weekly routine

In addition to accommodating the practices of employers and hiring managers, applying for jobs on Tuesdays can be in your personal best interest from a preparation standpoint. Many job seekers find it useful to develop and refine their application materials (resume, cover letter, and other items) during the weekends, so they’re ready to be submitted by Tuesday. Furthermore, applying earlier in the week allows you more time to fulfill other aspects of your job search, such as informational interviews or networking meetings, which are often easier to schedule at the end of the week.

While there are no guarantees, strategizing the timing of your job applications can help to improve your odds of hearing back from employers and securing a new job. You’ll also feel more comfortable and confident as you navigate your job search and apply to new positions.
