Local MLK Weekend Celebrations

 

The Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday is an official day of service and celebrates the civil rights leader’s life and legacy. If you are looking for ways to honor and celebrate Dr. King this weekend, here are some options in the Houston and DFW Metro areas.  Feel free to share additional events in the comments!

 

HOUSTON

Houston Black Real Estate Association (HBREA) is having an MLK Day Parade at 10am on the 16th.  The parade will start at HCC on San Jacinto downtown.
Support small businesses by attending the MLK Celebration Pop-Up Shop event 1pm-4pm in Pearland.
Go to the Living the Dream Slab Parade and block party Sunday the 15th 2pm – 6pm in Southeast Houston.
The 2023 MLK Grande Parade will be held in Midtown Houston on the 16th at 10am, originating on San Jacinto Street & Elgin Street.
MLK Freedom Liturgy – Restoring Justice and friends will gather and walk to the Harris County Jail to sing songs and pray for the 9K detainees there.
The Sherm G. Health Awareness Foundation is celebrating MLK Day with a purpose:  health screenings, food, and music.
The Downtown Rotary Club of Houston is hosting civil rights activist Robert L. Woodson, Sr. as a guest speaker at their annual MLK Luncheon on January 31st.

 

DALLAS/FORT WORTH

MLK Life & Legacy Community Event will provide health screenings, gas assistance, food boxes, free haircuts, and more!
MLK Day at The Dock Bookshop – family story time & pizza party, Film discussion, panel discussion
BLAACK Bazaar Sip & Shop, many black and minority owned businesses represented with a variety of items including an open bar, vintage clothing, handmade jewelry, streetwear, hand-poured candles, delicious catered food and more.
